Case Study: Plan International Zambia
Taking Action to Ending Child Marriage

Plan International Zambia has been using our Smart Solar Media (SSM) system since early 2021 as part of their on-going projects and awareness campaigns. One of the key campaigns that Plan Zambia has been involved on, focuses on creating further awareness towards taking action to ending child marriage. Tespackโ€™s SSM system has been used as part of this campaign in order to reach the most remote areas in Zambia, in disseminating information about the harmful practices of child marriage and the impact it has on the overall development of girls who have gone this through.

Taking Action to Ending the Child Marriage – โ€œSeeing is Believingโ€

Zambia has one of the highest child marriage rates in the world with 31% of women aged 20-24 married by the age of 18. In Malawi, 1 in 2 girls are married by the age of 18 as found by the UN Women Africa research. Plan International has been working on their campaign โ€œSeeing is Believingโ€, in taking action and creating awareness to ending child marriage while providing further access to opportunities for local girls and women of Zambia.

โ€œBy ending child marriage we want to create equality between the sexes. A woman should take a leading role in society,โ€ says Charity, a 24 year old youth activist who has been campaigning for an end to child marriage in Malawi.

As large part of the population of Zambia lives in rural regions, with close to 70% of the country not having access to electricity, as found by Sustainable Energy for All research, a key challenge remains in how to reach the people in the most remote locations and to provide them with access to latest information, not to mention how to provide them the same equal access to education.

Organising workshops and training in rural areas

With Tespackโ€™s Smart Solar Media (SSM) system, Plan International Zambia personnel and workers have been able to power their devices such as phones and laptops, but most importantly, they have had access to powering projectors and speakers as part of the SSM system, which has allowed them to showcase videos and other audiovisual content which has played a major role in carrying out workshops and awareness campaigns. As the campaign slogan goes, โ€œseeing is believing, it has been utmost important to show visual materials and content to locals in order for them to engage better and to understand the information more effectively.

On average, each workshop or training session had around 50-80 participants. The SSM system lasted in use for around 6-8 hours which allowed participants to enjoy different audiovisual content for a full day.

Tespackโ€™s SSM system also helped to collect data on the field by allowing Plan International Zambia personnel to carry out surveys and questionnaires on the screen with the participants answering the questions with their clickers. This supported the overall reduction of paper based data collection towards a more sustainable usage.

Pilot Manufacturing Partnership with the
University of Engineering and Management in Jaipur – India

During the past 2 years Covid-19 affected manufacturing and disrupted the hardware industry globally; from IC shortages to component transportation in general, the logistics and whole hardware industry became difficult to deal with. Prototyping is one thing but ramping up production involves new tooling and processes that require high quality controls and specialised labour. Unfortunately due to the lockdown this was impossible for some companies due to the traveling restrictions imposed by Covid-19 but luckily, as per usual entrepreneurship taught us to find new alternatives and partnerships to find solutions.
At the end of 2021, we were excited to embark on a new partnership with the University of Engineering and Management (UEM) in Jaipur, India. The UEM is one of the most prestigious universities in India where they have taken a different approach in education as all last year students are also expected to be part of real company projects before graduting. Starting a partnership with the university allowed us to maneuver through some of the challenges that we faced at the time due to Covid restrictions as we were able to start manufacturing and assembly piloting in Jaipur while also supporting the last year students through training and technology transfer projects.

Pilot Manufacturing and Assembly in Jaipur – a Success Story

Now, we are glad to share that the first phase of this project has been successfully completed. Together, between the research associates, our engineers and founding executives at Tespack, we have created a manufacturing piloting process where the final year engineering students from the UEM have been part of the assembly process for our Smart Solar Media system (SSM), which is currently being utilized in off-grid regions worldwide. Our SSM system can provide around 8 hours of uninterrupted power for converting any room or a space into a smart digital classroom with state of the art HD projector, sound system and smart battery management system developed by us.

We also want to thank Dr. Pradeep Kumar Sharma, Research Associateย Shopan Dey andย Research Associateย Afaq Ahman for their commitment and contribution as part of this project, while congratulating the first batch of students who have graduated from our programme: Rishita Das, Kingshuk Bairagi , Swagatta Dutta, Souhita Biswas.

Future Tespack Projects in Remote Areas – Local Assembly

After this successful piloting, we are experimenting with local manufacturing processes in order to provide employment opportunities for locals in different regions while at the same time providing maintenance and training to our customers locally in remote areas.

We were able to create the manufacturing process for a pilot unit factory in Jaipur that we will implement later in Zambia with our local partners for larger mass quantities, as most of our current projects and partners are based in the African continent

Tespack Launched in Zambia during Finnish Business Week

Earlier this month, Tespack launched its latest solutions in Zambia by showcasing their Smart Solar Media (SSM) system at the FinBiz week organized by the Finnish Embassy in Lusaka and AGS. Thanks to their support, we had the pleasure to invite and meet with leading organizations from Zambia such as Plan International, World Vision and Solidaridad Network, while also meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture and Education. New partnerships and collaborations were forged with several organizations. During the FinBiz week, Tespack also had the opportunity to represent their technology solutions at the largest expo in Zambia, AgriTech Expo.

Facts that make Audio Visual a must in education

Studies have found that, after three days, only 10-20% of written/spoken information has been stored in the long-term memory, but almost 65% of visual information can be recalled after three days. Other studies have found that an illustrated text is 9% more effective than text alone.

Partnership with Solidaridad Network

Partnership with Climate Smart Farming Project – GFF Consortium

We are excited to announce our collaboration with the Green Fluent Foundation in Zambia, together with a Finnish consortium being formed by leading Finnish tech and edtech companies. Partnership with Teachers Union Consortium

More than two-thirds of adult Zambians are literate, although the rates of literacy are significantly higher among men than women. For this reason, a collaboration has been started to equip teachers with advanced technology in order to teach in any rural regions of Zambia. This collaboration will bring access to the latest digital educational content for people living in rural regions.

A collaboration agreement has been signed between Tespack and Finnish companies of Soprano and Claned as well as with the Zambian Union of Teachers, Onyx Connect and MEM Edtech Solutions. This collaboration has been facilitated and continues to be supported by AGS. Stay tuned for coming updates!

Partnership with Plan Zambia

Since 1996, Plan International Zambia has been promoting childrenโ€™s rights alongside communities, partners and the government. They support the most vulnerable children and their communities to be free from poverty, while tackling the root causes of issues girls are facing such as child marriage, teenage pregnancy, violence, exclusion and poverty.

The aim of this partnership will be to create further awareness about the harmful practices of child marriage among girls and how to inspire them to pursue further education to follow their dreams.

Agriculture is by far the most important economic activity in Africa. It provides employment for about two-thirds of the continent’s working population and for each country contributes an average of 30 to 60 percent of gross domestic product and about 30 percent of the value of exports.

Although agriculture is the heartbeat of Africa, there are major obstacles that limit the success of small-scale farming in Africa. These obstacles can be divided into four categories:

In a large part of Southern African countries such as in Ghana, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the majority of the population completely relies on the agricultural system for their livelihood. Unfortunately, the agriculture industry has not been able to grow to its full potential as there is a common trend that many farmers in these countries never get above a middle school education and in some cases have never been to school due to the lack of resources.

Statistics carried out by the World Economic Forum show that around 70% of Africans make their living through agriculture and that technology could transform the way they work, in tackling some of their key challenges. UNESCO research interviewed farmers in rural regions and both younger and older respondents emphasized that indigenous knowledge, skills and technology were insufficient to meet the current challenges of generating a rural livelihood. However, there was a massive opportunity if such issues were to be addressed.

Powering Agriculture in Southern Africa

Technology and agriculture education is a must to continue supporting the growth of agriculture in Southern Africa. New farming methods need to take place to optimize the harvest as well as utilize new technology equipment that makes things easier for farmers and allows them to work smarter with better results.

The issues facing the agriculture world are systemic and cannot be solved by one actor or intervention alone. For this reason, Tespack and Solidaridad Network are joining forces for a maximum amplified impact. Taking education and technology to rural areas with the latest agriculture techniques will be the main objective as this will equip local farmers with access to new information and knowledge which will support them in increasing their access to vital information and good practices that can have a positive impact on their farming practices and harvesting.

Tespack Launching Collaboration with Solidaridad Network in Zambia & Mozambique

Solidaridad Network works in over 40 countries worldwide to create fair and sustainable supply chains. Solidaridad Network is also responsible for 150.000 hectares of sustainable land and all of this land is being handled by the 37.000 farmers, miners and workers they have trained. With their know-how and expertise on supporting farmers, Tespack is glad to be collaborating with Solidaridad Network in supporting their work in rural regions in Zambia and Mozambique.

Bringing Access to Digital Tools & Training in Off-Grid Regions

With Tespackโ€™s Smart Solar Media (SSM), local farmers in off-grid regions can get access to new applications and technology as well as farming training by accessing new types of information such as visuals and videos. Solidaridad Network will be piloting the SSM systems in Katete and Petauke in Zambia as well as in Angonia, Tsangano and Macanga districts in Mozambique.
Using Tespackโ€™s SSM system, Solidaridad Network can train farmers in remote areas with the newest techniques of farming. In most remote areas there is no electricity and using the SSM system will provide access in powering mobile tools and most importantly, carrying out training and workshops by accessing audiovisual content as the system comes with built-in audio-visual technology. The SSM system can be recharged with solar energy or from the normal grid and it can provide continuous power for up to 12 hours with one charge.

The power of audiovisual learning

There are a lot of different ways of learning, such as, auditory learning, visual learning, kinaesthetic learning, verbal learning etcetera. They all have their merits and benefits. It is scientifically proven that audiovisual learning is the best way to go. Around 40 percent of learners respond better to visual information than just text alone. Simply seeing a picture allows users to recreate the experience in their mind. eLearning professionals can benefit from this by telling stories in their courses through entrancing images and compelling videos.

Why is audiovisual learning so important?

It helps with both the short- and long-term memory. With audiovisuals it will be easier to store information in the long-term memory, visuals help students make sense out of the content and direct attention, increasing the possibilities that the learners will remember the material, by pairing certain content with meaningful images. Besides having long-term memory benefits, the use of audio visual aids improves student’s critical and analytical thinking. It helps to remove abstract concepts through visual presentation. Hence, around 65% of the population comprises visual learners. So by using visuals in education you can improve learning by more than 400% according to Shiftelearning.

Types of Learning

Audio

Auditory learners make up 30% of the population. If youโ€™re an auditory learner information comes in best through your ears, from speeches, presentations or audio books.

Visual

Visual learners make up 65% of the population. They tend to be neat and tidy, excellent spellers and quick to read charts. Visual learners also tend to be the fast talkers

Kinesthetic

Kinesthetics make up just 5% of the population. They are primarily male and love anything hands-on. These learners are often skilled athletes or musicians and are drawn to science experiments and field trips.

The Smart Solar Media system

All of this is possible through the Smart Solar Media system (SSM). Through audio and visual learning the students are more likely to retain the information in long-term memory. Because of the fact that in most rural areas there isn’t any electricity, the SSM is perfect, because the SSM can power any device up to 19 volts (i.e. projector, laptop, tablet, phones, etc.). It is built in audio-visual technology (speakers and projector) and it provides educational content that has been loaded in the system (or you can also connect a laptop with HDMI to it). The SSM system can be recharged with solar energy or from the normal grid, and it can provide continuous power of up to 12 hours with one charge.

Did you know that Tespackโ€™s SSM system is already used by Plan International, Fingo and Suomi-Somalia Association because they know the benefits of audiovisual learning, for example in Uganda Plan International is using the system in order to carry out training and education in the most rural regions while the Suomi-Somalia Association is using the system in Somalia to disseminate healthcare related information in a more effective way. Powering Mobile Health Clinics

Providing Better Access to Maternal Health Services and Information through Smart Energy

In Somalia one in twelve women die due to pregnancy-related causes as they face enormous risks according to the borgen project. One of the biggest complications is the fact that many women receive the medical services too late. This is a significant factor in maternal deaths. One of the reasons for this is lack of knowledge about complications and the benefits of modern health care services.

IOM, International Organisation for Migration, and Finland-Somalia Association work together in order to promote and improve the maternal and child health service delivery in Jubaland, Somalia as part of their Mobile Health Clinic project. Tespack began to collaborate with the Finland-Somalia Association during 2021 and as part of the existing Mobile Health Clinic project in Somalia, the Smart Solar Media (SSM) system has been supporting locals in rural regions with better access to health care information. Local women have been educated on the complications of childbirth while the SSM system has provided extra support for powering needed mobile devices during the project.

Tespack Collaborating with Finland-Somalia Association in Somalia

The maternal health services project is about helping women and children in the rural areas of Somalia, to provide them with access to health care services. The mobile health clinics will give many young women basic health services while helping thousands of children with treatments and access to basic medicine.

Finland-Somalia Association and its partner NGO in Somalia, Sahal Healthcare and Development Association, will promote and improve child and maternal health situation in Afmadow, Somalia, by scaling up the operations of a mobile health clinic in Afmadow town and its surroundings. The project will be conducted in a close collaboration with local health actors and Jubaland Ministry of Health. It builds on the Daryeel Mobile Health Clinic, which is financed by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.

Providing Better Access to Health Care Information and Training

Due to power shortages and lack of access to electricity in rural parts of Somalia, reaching communities and disseminating information about health care services has been a challenge during the project. These rural regions can be hard to reach with limited access to electricity which makes it difficult to organize workshops and training sessions for the locals.
By utilising portable energy solutions that can power all mobile equipment needed for teaching, while accessing audiovisuals for a better learning experience, as according to studies, learning can be improved by up to 400 percent when using audiovisuals as part of the teaching. Tespackโ€™s Smart Solar Media (SSM) system provides locals, especially women and young people, access to education and information about their reproductive health.

โ€œThe mobile unit will provide quality basic health services to 3300 pregnant women and women of childbearing age. Furthermore, the clinic will treat and give basic medicine to 8100 children.โ€

During this collaboration, workshops can be held in rural areas to create further awareness of the maternal issues that could occur during pregnancy and childbirth.

How the Smart Solar Media System Works

Tespackโ€™s Smart Solar Media system (SSM) can power any device up to 19 volt (i.e. projector, laptop, tablet, phones, etc.). By incorporating audiovisuals (projector and speaker), solar energy and latest power electronics, the system can provide continuous power of up to 8 hours with one recharge.

The SSM system has a modular battery system that can be used individually or be joined to turn it into a power station of 120.000mAh (up to 460W of energy). All this can be easily transported in commercial flights thus reducing the overall deployment times in cases of emergencies.

Access to TEDx Content in Rural Areas

Feeding our curiosity and enjoying TED Talks is easy for people with access to digital devices and the internet, as we can find our favorite content at our fingertips in all our devices. We take it as granted to Watch TED Talks on the go or at home with TEDs mobile app, tablet and smart TV apps.

But the reality in rural areas is different, as accessing something so simple like TED digital content online in a few clicks; can turn into a big mission in rural areas, where they have no access to mobile devices, internet connectivity or basic electricity to power a mobile device.

Education is indeed the most powerful weapon to change a person, nation and society as a whole. But the power to make this happen at a global scale involves also supporting rural areas, where their truth is different from ours. Knowledge should not be limited to where there is energy, TED content allows people to access content that can change their reality and help them become their own heroes.

Spreading Ideas worth sharing with Green Tech!

According to the United Nations nearly 3 billion people have never used the internet, despite the Covid-19 pandemic driving people online. To have a clear perspective to this shocking number; what this information conveys is that up to 37% of the world’s population does not have access to up to date quality content.

For this reason Tespack, a company that specializes in creating smart mobile energy solutions will join forces with TEDx Nyarugenge in Rwanda. TEDx Nyarugenge is an independently organized event that brings more than 1.000 activists, community change drivers and everybody else who seeks to change climate change. Supported by the Finnish ambassador of Zambia: Ms. Pirjo Suomela-Chowdhury to bring together two startup ecosystems towards a more results orientated market. Zambia is a land of opportunities where there are many start-ups looking into growth. The event will take place Tuesday 30th November 2021.ย 

Currently with Tespackยดs expansion and collaborations to support Zambia`s projects in remote areas with our latest Mobile Energy solution โ€œSmart Solar Media Systemโ€ that powers and turns any place into a smart classroom, helping Zambia bring digital education into energy shortage areas. Such projects led into collaborations withย  Plan International Zambia and Solidaridad Network, as well as other institutions to utilize our energy tech solutions and fuse it with their projects know-how to support even further their communities. These types of collaboration have proven to be successful for both ecosystems and with this event we will ensure it is just the beginning of more collaborations to come in both country ecosystems and together create a bigger impact.

The AGS-program

Natureโ€™s Nectar works with communities and partners around conservation areas in Zambia to produce sustainable honey. It is their aim to protect the wild areas, while ensuring the sustained livelihoods of the immediate communities.

Dawa Health, a digital health startup leveraging technology to improve health-system infrastructure across Sub-Saharan Africa. Their mission is to provide innovative healthcare solutions to low-income patients, closing the health service gap between the affluent and marginalised communities of Africa.

They offer eLearning services and supply of Tablets to more than 35.000 pupils in Zambia

MEM EdTech Solutions

Offer teachers to network and have access to quality teaching and learning materials, allowing the teaching process to go beyond the classroom setup. They also offer the DiC-Kit, an offgrid capable kit that harnesses XR (Virtual & Augmented Reality). These kits will provide offline access to educational content provided on the online platform to the remotest parts of the country ensuring that no child is left behind.

University of Lusaka

In 2008, the University of Lusaka introduced its Bachelor’s Degree programmes in partnership with the Copperbelt University and in 2009 began offering its own programmes. Equal Access to Digital Educationย through Green Energy Tech

COVID-19 has affected more than 1.6 Billion learners in more than 190 countries; the impact is more drastic in regions where there is energy shortage as digital solutions can not be implemented due to the energy scarcity. To make education possible during these critical times, the solution has to be digital as well as being energy independent. We are living in a digital society and failure to achieve this creates a gap and inequality in the education system, where the most up-to-date are those who can access energy and all of the opportunities this provides them.

Joining Powers with Plan International & Audi Environmental Foundation

For these reasons, Tespack has joined powers with Audi Environmental Foundation and Plan International Finland in order to close the digital education and entrepreneurial gap in places where there is lack of access to energy or shortage of energy. Together, we will collaborate and support Plan International Finlandโ€™s โ€œYouth Smartup Factoryโ€ in Uganda during 2022 by providing the latest mobile sustainable energy tech that can turn any space into a smart classroom and power any needed mobile device to provide access to digital education. Or as World Economic Forum shared, imagine carrying a smart school in a bag.

Digital Education Powered with Sustainable Energy

Tespackยดs Smart Solar Media system (SSM) can turn any space into a smart classroom by incorporating audiovisuals, solar energy and latest technology thus providing continuous power of up to 8 hours with one recharge. The SSM system has a modular battery system that can be used individually or be joined to turn it into a power station of 120.000mAh (up to 460W of energy). All this can be easily transported in commercial flights thus reducing the overall deployment times in cases of emergencies.

Powering Digital Education and Entrepreneurship

The โ€œPowering Digital Education Projectโ€will power the training centre workshops to carry out digital education in coding, computer skills and entrepreneurshipย  for at-risk youth between ages of 17โ€“24. The project will create gender equality in digital skills while also reducing overall CO2 emissions thanks to its SMART Energy Platform that tracks how much energy has been created sustainably while informing when batteries need to be replaced thus supporting a circular economy.

The Audi Environmental Foundation, founded in 2009, promotes green innovations for a livable future. For twelve years now, the Audi Environmental Foundation has been making an active contribution to environmental protection, thus shaping new paths for sustainable activity. The foundationโ€™s commitment is multifaceted and of a long-term nature. In the projects it supports, the Audi Environmental Foundation focuses not only on nature and the environment, but also works toward a sustainable human-environment system.

Three fields of action can be derived from it:

GREENOVATION – combining traditional environmental protection with innovative technologies.

ENTHUSIASM – using a variety of projects and formats to get people excited about the environment

RESPONSIBILITY – taking on social and ecological responsibility through targeted projects and thus giving back to society and the environment.
